what will a lesson look like?
Warm-Up/Review and Introduce New Learning
Lessons will begin with drills and review. This time will include visual and auditory drills of previously taught concepts and sounds. Following this part of the lesson, I will introduce new learning concepts. This will vary greatly among learners. For some, it is an introduction to new letter sounds or letter-sound combinations. For others, it might be learning new suffixes or spelling patterns.
Reading and Word Work
During the second part of our lesson, we’ll spend some time practicing reading and manipulating words. This gives your child a chance to try out new skills while also reinforcing the ones they’re still mastering, helping them feel confident and successful along the way.
Writing/Spelling
Together, we will practice encoding (spelling) with the new spelling pattern or graphemes learned in the session. Students will have practice writing controlled sentences.
Practice! Read and Apply
During the final part of the lesson, we will apply new and previously learned concepts to a text. We will practice reading words within connected text. Decodable texts will be used in addition to word lists. An opportunity to strengthen reading comprehension is provided through discussion of the text.
